ICOM exists because BMW needed one interface for three generations of protocols: K-Line, DCAN and Ethernet. If your car is a 2010+ F or G-Series, two of those three protocols are irrelevant to you — the car talks Ethernet, and an ENET cable speaks it natively with no emulation layer in between.
Clone ICOMs add their own failure modes: outdated firmware, flaky USB drivers, WiFi dropouts. Forums are full of ISTA+ sessions lost to ICOM connection errors that a $19.99 cable would have avoided.
