Install E-SYS and the E-SYS Launcher (manages token/EST for your version)
Download PSdZData matching your chassis (F-series vs G-series data differs) — full data, not lite, for flashing
Point E-SYS Options → Settings → Program → Data at your PSdZData folder
Connect the ENET cable and complete the universal network setup (automatic IP, 169.254.x.x)

Connecting to the ZGW
Ignition on. In E-SYS, choose the connection matching your chassis (e.g. F020/G020 via VIN or direct ZGW URL)
Click Connect — the status bar shows the gateway connection; the car may take 10–20 seconds to respond
Read the VIN (Read VIN button) — automatic VIN detection proves your ENET link is fully working
If 'connection refused': the car went to sleep — open a door or press Start, then retry. See Troubleshooting for the full fix list

FA Read: Your Safety Baseline
Before touching anything, read the vehicle order (FA) and save it. Then read each ECU's coding data (Read Coding Data) and store the files. This baseline is your undo button — with it, any change can be reverted exactly.
Rule: no baseline, no coding. The two minutes this takes have saved more ECUs than any other habit in the scene.
04 / FIRST EDIT
Your First FDL Change
Pick one low-risk change from the hidden features list — e.g. lock/unlock acoustic confirmation
Open the target ECU in FDL editor, locate the parameter, change the Wert value
Save, then Code (FDL Code) — watch the log for completion
Test the feature immediately. If anything misbehaves: re-code from your saved baseline
Any correctly wired one — E-SYS only cares about the Ethernet link to the ZGW. The $19.99 cable is the classic choice; the Type-C model adds the volt display that's genuinely useful for E-SYS's longer sessions.
E-SYS vs Bimmercode?
E-SYS is the engineering tool: full access, full responsibility, free ecosystem. Bimmercode is the curated app: fewer options, guardrails, phone-based. Many owners use Bimmercode for convenience features and E-SYS for deeper work.
What is PSdZData and why does it matter?
It's BMW's data package describing every ECU's parameters and firmware. Wrong or mismatched PSdZData causes missing parameters and failed coding — always match the data version to your chassis and software target.
Can I brick my car with E-SYS?
Coding (FDL) errors are almost always reversible from your baseline. Flashing errors are the real risk — which is why flashing demands full PSdZData, a wired connection and a battery maintainer, no exceptions.
