01 / STEP 1–2

Physical Connection & Network Config

1. Ignition on (engine off). Plug the adapter into the OBD2 port — Type-C model shows battery voltage immediately; 12.2V+ for diagnostics, 13V+ (maintainer) for programming
2. Connect to your computer: USB-C direct, RJ45 to Ethernet port, or join the WiFi adapter's network
3. Set the network adapter to obtain IP automatically — the car's gateway assigns a link-local 169.254.x.x address (APIPA). Verify with ipconfig within ~30 seconds
4. Set the network profile to Private and allow the interface through your firewall (or temporarily disable firewall on this interface only)

Verify Before You Code

Ping the gateway: the car responds on its 169.254 address
Open your software and read the VIN — automatic VIN read confirms full DoIP communication
Run a quick fault-code scan before any write operation
Only then proceed to coding/programming — with a maintainer attached for anything long

Golden rule: read first, write second. A successful VIN read and scan prove the link is healthy before you touch a single byte of configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a static IP for ENET?

For most software, no — automatic (APIPA 169.254.x.x) is correct. Some legacy E-SYS setups reference a fixed 169.254.1.x client address; our E-SYS guide covers both conventions.

Why does Windows say 'unidentified network'?

That's normal for APIPA links to a car. 'Unidentified network, no internet' is exactly what a healthy ENET connection looks like — the car is not a router.

Can I set this up on macOS?

Yes for the network layer (automatic IP on the USB-C/Ethernet interface). The diagnostic software itself (E-SYS, XENTRY, ODIS, Pathfinder) is Windows-only — most Mac users run a Windows VM; see the VMware notes in Troubleshooting.

Does setup differ for the WiFi adapter?

Only step 2: join the adapter's WiFi network instead of plugging in. Everything after that is identical.
