Which Cars Qualify

CarPlay depends on the head unit, not the chassis badge. NBT EVO ID5/ID6 (2016+) and MGU iDrive 7 (2019+) support CarPlay activation and fullscreen coding over the ENET connection. Pre-2016 NBT and CIC units do not have the hardware path — those cars need retrofit head units, not coding.

Activation vs Fullscreen — Don't Confuse Them

Activation — CarPlay isn't enabled at all: enable the option in the head unit's coding (Bimmercode one-tap on supported units, or E-SYS FDL), then pair the phone
Fullscreen — CarPlay works but shows in a split window: one parameter family in HU_MGU/HU_NBT_EVO widens it to the full display
Both are software-only and reversible — no hardware changes

When CarPlay Drops or Won't Pair

CarPlay runs over the car's WiFi, not the ENET link — the adapter is only for the coding step. Pairing failures after coding are usually a stale phone pairing: delete the car from iPhone CarPlay settings, delete the phone in iDrive, reboot the head unit (volume button hold 30 s), and pair fresh. Wireless CarPlay dropouts in dense WiFi areas improve after an iDrive firmware update.

Adapter choice for this job: phone users pick the Type-C adapter or WiFi adapter for Bimmercode; laptop+E-SYS users pick the $19.99 cable.

Does fullscreen CarPlay coding survive iDrive updates?

Usually yes for minor updates; major version jumps can restore defaults — recode with your saved profile in minutes.

Can I activate CarPlay on a 2017 F30 that never had it?

On NBT EVO ID6 units, in most cases yes via coding. On ID5 it depends on the exact head-unit hardware revision — Bimmercode will tell you after reading the ECU.

Is Android Auto the same process?

Broadly yes on MGU cars — activation and fullscreen follow the same module logic. BMW added Android Auto later than CarPlay, so model-year coverage differs.
