Factory CarPlay in a window is a tease. Here's how owners enable full-width CarPlay — and activate it on cars that never had it.
CarPlay depends on the head unit, not the chassis badge. NBT EVO ID5/ID6 (2016+) and MGU iDrive 7 (2019+) support CarPlay activation and fullscreen coding over the ENET connection. Pre-2016 NBT and CIC units do not have the hardware path — those cars need retrofit head units, not coding.
| Head Unit | Typical Years | CarPlay | Fullscreen |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBT (ID4) | 2012–2016 | ✗ retrofit only | — |
| NBT EVO ID5/ID6 | 2016–2019 | ✓ activate / enable | ✓ codable |
| MGU (iDrive 7) | 2019+ | ✓ most cars equipped | ✓ one-tap coding |
| iDrive 8 | 2021+ | ✓ equipped | firmware-dependent |
CarPlay runs over the car's WiFi, not the ENET link — the adapter is only for the coding step. Pairing failures after coding are usually a stale phone pairing: delete the car from iPhone CarPlay settings, delete the phone in iDrive, reboot the head unit (volume button hold 30 s), and pair fresh. Wireless CarPlay dropouts in dense WiFi areas improve after an iDrive firmware update.
