What Is DoIP?

The four-letter standard that put Ethernet in your OBD2 port — and made a $29.99 cable do what dealer hardware used to.

01 / DEFINITION

DoIP in One Paragraph

DoIP — Diagnostics over Internet Protocol, standardised as ISO 13400 — packages vehicle diagnostic messages (UDS) inside Ethernet frames instead of CAN frames. Your car's diagnostic gateway becomes a network device with an IP address; your laptop talks to it the way it talks to any networked machine. That's the entire trick, and it's why a simple, correctly-wired cable can replace four-figure proprietary hardware on modern cars.

02 / WHY ETHERNET

Why the Industry Switched

Speed. Classic CAN diagnostics run at 500 kbps; modern ECU firmware files exceed 1 GB. At CAN speeds a full flash takes hours and fails often; at DoIP's 100 Mbps the same file moves in minutes. Every flash-heavy platform — BMW F/G, Mercedes 2016+, JLR 2017+, VW/Audi 2017+ — migrated for this reason.

03 / PINOUT

The OBD2 DoIP Pinout

OBD2 PinFunction
Pin 4Chassis ground (CGND)
Pin 5Signal ground (SGND)
Pin 12Ethernet TX+ (100BASE-TX)
Pin 13Ethernet TX− (100BASE-TX)
Pin 16Battery +12V (powers adapters)
A correctly wired ENET adapter maps exactly these pins. Every unit we sell is continuity-tested on this pinout — see the setup guide for what happens next.
04 / YOUR CAR

Does Your Car Use DoIP?

Rule of thumb: BMW from 2010 (F-Series), Mercedes from ~2016, JLR from 2017, VW/Audi from 2017 — plus virtually every EV launched since 2018. The full model-by-model list lives on the compatibility matrix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DoIP the same as OBD2?
OBD2 is the connector and regulatory diagnostic requirement; DoIP is one of the communication protocols that can run through that connector. Modern cars typically support both classic OBD2 (emissions, on CAN) and full diagnostics over DoIP simultaneously.
Is DoIP the same as automotive Ethernet?
DoIP runs over automotive-grade Ethernet physical layers (100BASE-TX on the OBD2 port; 1000BASE-T1 inside some vehicles). For adapter purposes, what matters is the OBD2 Ethernet pins — the ISO 13400 session runs on top.
What software speaks DoIP?
E-SYS, ISTA+, XENTRY, DTS Monaco, ODIS, VCDS, Pathfinder, JET-Pro — every modern diagnostic platform. The adapter just needs to deliver Ethernet to the car.
